Emergency migration to Neocities – Nekoweb is shady

20/03/2026

Nekoweb's parent company, Kicya LLC, is registered at an address that is a well-known address among various shell companies and scams .

I'm in the midst of wiping my Nekoweb while I'm starting to work on a blog about "the dark side of the retro web" because there's way more to this than the SpaceHey drama and Nekoweb's shell company.

"New" Neocities mirror

19/03/2026

After this SpaceHey drama and my general aversion towards anything Discord, I digged through the web and came across this...

This prompted me to revive my long-abandoned site on Neocities because there's something more recent that I'd like to cover but may get me banned. This mirror may only be temporary since I'm still not sure whether to move back to Neocities or revamp my Codeberg Pages which I already used as a HTML mirror of my Gemini capsule.

No SSI + distancing myself from retro social media sites

18/03/2026

SSI's are rather exclusive to Nekoweb, so I decided against them in order to be able to migrate it in case Nekoweb should (ever) go down in the future or see some really petty drama.

The recent drama around SpaceHey revealed something to me that made me question the entire "web nostalgia" trend. Most of those projects effectively are run by teens and (impulsive) young adults who strangely are addicted to Discord and normalized alt-right speech and manners, even by those claiming to be left-wing. The overall vibe is extremely "clique-y", petty, nihilistic and overall just toxic, for the lack of a better term. I grew out of this nonsense a long time ago and don't want to be associated with any of this terminally online stuff (or the actual crimes surrounding them), especially if those sites' primary user base consists of minors with visible mental health issues.

flounder.online accepted my registration

14/03/2026

So apparently my registration application was accepted and I just never received a confirmation via email. It's weird, considering I already migrated my capsule to Codeberg and would like to see what Iris comes up with in a few weeks but I guess it won't cause any harm to host another mirror directly on Gemini.

Fortunately Flounder allows file uploads. You can already visit it, both via a Gemini browser of your choice and on the regular web.

Small update

11/03/2026

I verified my little-used Bluesky account with my HTML mirror of my Gemini capsule and added it, alongside my Codeberg, to my site.

Unfortunately I still haven't heard back from any Gemini host I applied at, meaning that if I should decide to stay in the Geminispace, I'll have to resort to Yestercities' independent successor (which at least will directly migrate my old capsule to the new service).

Applied for flounder.online and smol.pub

04/03/2026

Yesterweb's Gemini capsule will shut down for good at some point but their new, independent hosting service won't be up until April or May. I'm left with two options and for the first one I applied for registration at both flounder.online and smol.pub. Depending on which hoster will respond first this is where my capsule will go back online.

If I shouldn't hear back from either, given that Geminispace has largely been abandoned, I'll be forced to manually convert each gemtext to HTML and move to Codeberg Pages. I do not want to host my research on my Nekoweb site since both are unrelated to each other and I do not want to put my trust into a single point of failure (even though this site would be easier to migrate than my capsule). I'll do some test conversions regardless just to estimate how long it'd take to move a Gemini capsule to the "big web" since my research season already has begin, albeit with the health-related delay and the fire at Zone I.

New profile on Nostr

02/03/2026

Since I don't want to make my Mastodon profile fully public again I created a Nostr account for very quick updates. It's not nearly as bad as people make it out to be and it's decentralized:

Backing up my capsule and my site to Codeberg

01/03/2026

Because of this recent incident I decided to backup both my capsule and my site to Codeberg. Git still is a mystery to me and I'm bs'ing my way through stuff but at least I no longer have to worry about another thumb drive failure in the future.

My capsule got wiped by Yesterweb

28/02/2026

Don't ask me what happened. I've been in bed the past three days and Yesterweb wiped every single capsule it hosts, including mine. No gemtext created before mid-February (?) is accessible anymore; I left a new "pleasereadthis" gemtext to at least notify those who exclusively visit my capsule after emailing seapunk. All of my gemtexts are managed offline, so I still got my local copies.

The reason why I'm not confident about the future of Yesterweb's Geminispace hosting service is the fact that it took seapunk one year and one month to issue a new certificate and never responded to my email about it. In fact nothing at Yesterweb but the empty capsules indicate any issues and there's zero transparency or even basic communcation about anything.

While I still hope that all Yesterweb capsules will be restored as soon as possible, it's no longer safe to host my amateur research on there. Running my own server is not possible at the moment and I trust other capsule hosters even less now, given that most people seem to have abandoned Geminispace.

The hives came for me

26/02/2026

It's been nearly eight years since I got knocked down this badly by an allergic reaction and this time it's impossible to determine what triggered it but it's so bad that I'm tied to my bed.

While I still can work on my IA Rejects to a certain degree (it covers my hands and typing hurts) I have to postpone the start of my ecologocial observation season since I cannot exclude the possibility that I may have become allergic to hazel pollen. I also cannot update my capsule AND this site beyond Status because I left my USB drive storing my local copies at my desk.

Migrating to Codeberg + first SSI tests

18/02/2026

Now that Gentoo is switching to Codeberg it's about time I make the switch, too. I also revived my abandoned IA Rejects repo hosting old PC games that have been rejected by the Internet Archive due to false-positive VirusTotal results. I may blog about it once I finished checking all MS-DOS/Windows 9x games and supplemented all necessary checksums. This repo will become part of my Resources collection when it's no longer looking as shady as it does right now.

Additionally I'm slowly starting to grasp SSI which Nekoweb introduced in January. As most pages actually have been individualized to rather minor but still noticeable degrees the only code I'll put in a dedicated HTML file to point to will be the footer. Even the navbar has been designed as to exclude links to the page that is currently open ( like no link to Status on the Status page) but I may be able to at least simplify pages unaffected by this like blog posts and individual Resources pages. Will take a while though; my IA Rejects collection is pretty big.

Extended hardware maintenance

17/02/2026

Naturally heating systems love to die during winters – mine failed due to some tiny piece of dirt that I had to get cleaned by a pro. Everything's working but one and a half day with no heating system really is a challenge.

I still need to get some business done and the new wave of snow I had to get rid of our pathway strained my joints. Tough times indeed.

Hardware maintenance

06/02/2026

My ancient Hyrican's fan decided to imitate a rocket takeoff and revealed an unhealthy lack of thermal paste. While I was at it I checked my main machines (minus my Asus laptop) and also put some fresh paste on their chips. All of them should survive another ten years without issues now.

(While did mention on my old paper.wf that it will get deleted by the end of January I ended up cleaning my asthmatic Acer and prepared this year's ecological observation templates and subdirs. I also ended up binging ATLA and Doctor Who.)

First self-made stamps and buttons!

10/01/2026

I know I should revamp my site-specific resources and the index page but I got distracted after I finished by button template PSD's and decided to create some buttons for brands that aren't available at all for some reason.

I also made my first stamps based on my own shots with stricter copyright. Those are part of a special collection that won't grow as much as the upcoming brands and entertainment-related stamps. it's only taking unusually long because a lot of blank stamp PNG's are poorly cropped and include asymmetrical transparency (likely because a lot of creators resort to ad-infested mobile apps instead of being bold enough to pirate Photoshop like us old farts used to do it back in the days).

I'm NOT taking commissions but feel free to check my resources every now and then to find fresh and rare web decor!

Happy New Year!

02/01/2026

Hope y'all had a good start into 2026!

I'm slowly starting to make parts of my Vernissage profile public again due to growing demand. Work on this site is progressing as usual but there may be a chance that my current generic Pinterest anime girl will get replaced by a different one that'll be hosted locally instead of referring to Pinterest and a new pfp also has been set.

Right now this status page is limited to ten entries but I'm considering to make it multi-page.

Minor cleanup & hardware maintenance

30/12/2025

It seems that there's not much to clean up to begin with, minus the "site-specific resources". Whilst working on the latter I continued checking my device's hard disks and it appears that my Acer's Toshiba may be suffering some something worse than just excessive degramentation on its Windows 7 partition.

Sure, this will grant me some ~content~ for my blog, for which I still want to mirror one of my SpaceHey blog posts to not let the 2025 section remain this sparse. At the same time another HDD currently's being scanned and this got its own unique Windows-related issues for some odd reason I've yet to figure out. Much to unpack, especially once I should get down to check my Fujitsu Cordant's 6 GB HDD (which I currently can't be arsed to due to a lack of free monitors and mounting the HDD to another machine requiring me to crack Windows XP on an install that hasn't seen any defragmentation since it's been upgraded from Windows 2000).

Yay, landing page!

22/12/2025

Actually it's still pretty ass but largely because everything looks ass on 1920x1080 and larger. No idea whether I'll tweak it further after the holidays because repth came up with some div classes that only make sense on my status page and my blog entries – guess I'll first do some code cleanup.

Misc Graphics!

21/12/2025

You know what will finally come after this. I also did some minor tweaks here and there and added some antipixels to my button collection.

Misc Graphics Collection

Blinkies!

19/12/2025

I started writing a new blog post but it turned into rant about academia so I decided to get my blinkie collection ready instead. I'm also planning to dump any other type of web decor in a misc page since I won't make an effort to actively collect anything beyond buttons, blinkies and stamps and some types of graphics such as antipixels don't take up much space anyway.

Stamps!

17/12/2025

Apparently the landing page will be the last page to see some necessary changes because I need a little more web decor. This means there will be a fourth collection dedicated to other web decor like dividers but for now I got my stamps page ready and it will continue to grow while I get the blinkies ready to assault your eyes.

Buttons!

13/12/2025

Whilst working on my landing page I noticed that some buttons simply didn't exist until now. Most online generators only seem to be compatible with Chrome/Chromium-based browsers while some sites rely on autogenerated SVG files for their brandings, so I had to resort to Photoshop and manually make some buttons. More buttons will be added in the future.

"Resources" in the making

05/12/2025

I decided to get my first two pages for "Resources" ready before finally putting my focus on this lousy landing page. Things will take even longer from now on for the simple reasons that it's the season, the recent Eurovision drama, and me still waiting for a call from my shop that was forced to cancel my appointment right when I actually need my car.

Switched to VSCodium

01/12/2025

Now that I test stuff on a local copy of my site I had to ditch Geany for seemingly having been abandoned and its webhelper plugin no longer shipping with a working build script. Tweaking VSCodium took a while because I had to fetch two binary packages, instead of one, and getting used to this heavier IDE still takes a while.

Again just some minor updates like the Parisienne font now being exclusive to the sidebar headers (minus the landing page for now) and pages no longer linking itself in the navigation list. Most new stuff currently happens offline and my "Resources" page already has grown too messy, so instead I'll finally start to work on a proper landing page to get this out of the way and to finish this year's summary of my ecological research which I'll keep on Geminispace (converting every Gemtext into HTML would be even more painful than converting conventional Markdown flavors).

Short Hello

19/11/2025

So... it's been a while since I last customized my own site. I recently riced a SpaceHey theme but I have to admit that it wasn't easy.

I used to have a site on Neocities but gave it up after AI usage started to grow rapidly and I ended up no longer feeling comfortable with sharing anything publicly. While I still don't feel entirely comfortable, I used to keep a small blog on the Fediverse, yet it remained largely inactive due to server outages and, which I noticed today, an expired SSL certificate. The last time a similar issue was fixed my blog remained inaccessible for months and now I'm back at that point where I consider migrating again.

For now this text is just meant to be a placeholder while I figure out how to customize my new site to fit my needs because I've got... multiple interests that will fill up my free Nekoweb storage fast, so I also have to think about what I'll host on here. There also may be a minor chance that I'll mirror my lepidopterology research currently hosted on Geminispace.

Stay tuned!
